If you’ve driven by the site of the library construction project lately, you’ve probably noticed that the building and grounds look like they are about ready for the library to return to its new home. So when will that happen?

Update of August 29

August has been moving month, and the furniture and books have been moved into the new space. More unpacking, shelving, and staff training are in the works, and the library will reopen around September 8.

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony has been set! The City of Takoma Park invites community members to a celebration of the grand opening of the newly renovated library on September 15, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. The ceremony will be followed by an open house, from 3:00 – 4:30. For more information, see this announcement on the city’s website.

Update of August 3

The new furniture for the library will be delivered the week of August 4, and the library’s interim location at 7505 New Hampshire Avenue is closed as of July 30 so staff can pack up and move into the new facility. It’s expected that the move will be completed and the library reopened by around Labor Day.

In-person, on-site library programs are on hiatus until the move is complete and the library is reopened. These include Neighborhood Circle Time, Canta Juego, Crochet & Cozies, and Family Chess. If you have books out on loan, you may hold on to them until the library reopens. If you need to return them, the return bin at the temporary facility on New Hampshire Ave will remain in operation throughout the move.

Sometime in September, there will be a grand reopening/ribbon cutting, but it’s likely that the library will actually reopen before the ceremony.

Update of July 3

On July 2, there was a construction update presented to city council. There are still some punch list items to be completed by the contractor. There will be a solar panel array installed on the roof, and furniture will be delivered and installed. On the current timeline, the library will close at its temporary location in late July or early August to prepare for the move. Furniture will be delivered beginning August 4, and will be installed over the next seven to eight business days. After that is done, in mid-August, library and recreation staff will move into the new facility. After staff has a chance to settle in and receives some additional training, there will be a “soft opening” late in August or early in September, with a ribbon-cutting event being planned for later in September.

Update of June 5

As of June 2, there is no firm date for reopening. There are a number of items on the contractor’s punch list before “substantial completion” (the stage in a construction project when the work is sufficiently complete for the owner to occupy or use the property, even if some minor work remains). That milestone is expected in the next couple of weeks. Another hurdle is for the county to issue an occupancy permit.

Furniture has been ordered, but a delivery date has not yet been given. Once there is a delivery date for the furniture, library staff will be able to calculate an approximate opening date. It is expected that the temporary location on New Hampshire Ave will close approximately one month (perhaps less) prior to reopening at the new library. While no reopening date has been set, library staff are hoping for a mid- to late-August reopening of the library.
